My husband’s boyhood home was in the northeast outskirts of Pittsburgh in a little town called Indianola. Southwestern Pennsylvania and parts of Ohio and West Virginia are rich in coal. Even though no more is mining being done in those parts now, there are countless abandoned mines running every which way underground.
People living in these mining areas often invested in mine-subsidence insurance as part of their homeowner’s insurance policy to mitigate the risk, but his family did not have that type of insurance. When their home started to sink because of a caved in mine below, they had to completely abandon that home and start over. A very costly mistake, but a valuable lesson that applies to more than just physical structures.
We have all heard it said that you need to have a strong foundation to build a solid structure that will not crumble, but did you know that originally came from the Bible? Matthew 7:25-27 says,
The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.
You need a firm foundation to build a house, or it will not last. You also need a firm foundation on which to build your relationship for it to last. Without that firm foundation, you are destined to fail.
Jesus provides that critical component of a firm foundation that is rock-solid to build your relationship upon. Jesus’ foundation centers on rock solid, tried and true, ideals and principles that can help you to keep your relationship on stable ground, not easily shaken, not subject to gradual erosion, not crumbling underneath the surface.
Do you want your marriage to thrive? Invite Jesus into your relationship if you want it to succeed.
Why would you want Jesus to be an active participant in your relationship? You have heard the saying “two is company, three is a crowd” or when you are with a couple, you tend to feel like a “third wheel,” but in this case, three is the perfect number, as long as it is you, your spouse, and Jesus. Let me share three reasons why I believe that you need to have Jesus in your midst.

- Why do you want Jesus to be in your relationship?
- The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” Matthew 7:25-27
- For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them. Matthew 18:20
- Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. Ecclesiastes 4:12
- How do you invite Jesus into your relationship?
- Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me. Revelation 3:20
- What does it look like to let Jesus join in your relationship?
- God’s definition of what love is and is not: Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a
